Scaffold Towers Have Come A Long Way From Their Early Origins
Frame scaffolds and a tower scaffold for centuries were made of wood. In the last four decades they have transitioned to metal; first iron, then steel, and then aluminum. In the last few years the manufactures of scaffolding, scaffold towers, tower scaffold, frame scaffold, and scaffold equipment have been experimenting with plastic and fiber filled plastic somewhat like the superstructure of commercial airplanes like the Boeing 787.
Metal Scaffold Towers Lead The Way
The newer metal and plasticized scaffold equipment is very sturdy and can be erected by one to three workers. A tower scaffold will reach three stories or more and will hold a dozen or so workers steadily who are busy and moving about doing their plastering, stuccoing, or painting.
Perry Scaffold
Perry Manufacturing has been making scaffolds for many years and they hold several patents.
Features of Perry Scaffolds
- The original Perry Scaffold features a patented Positive Engagement Locking System for fast and easy assembly.
- The Perry Scaffold features 5” casters for stability and ease of movement and they are available in a variety of lengths ranging from four to ten foot; all are thirty inches wide.
- The Perry scaffolds are stackable up to three units high with use of outriggers.
- One person can assemble a scaffold tower section in less than a minute without tools.
- The platform heights are adjustable by one person in seconds and there are five basic components: two end frame access ladders, two adjustable platform-support trusses, and one platform.
The Perry scaffolds are available with optional 5 inch or 8 inch locking casters or 5 inch by 5 inch square base plates. The base assembly rolls through a 30 inch wide and 80 inch high doorway using optional 5 inch locking casters. Plus the platform heights are adjustable in 4 inch increments from just a few inches off the floor to a maximum standing height of 6 feet. The Perry Scaffold meets or exceeds OSHA/ANSI Standards.
Frame Scaffold
A frame scaffold unit comes in two framed sections. These frame scaffold sections are hinged and can be folded out and assembled by one person using pins plugged into self-aligning holes. The pins are safety chained to the sections they are to be connected into. These frame scaffolds are very sturdy and will support several workers with their equipment and the heavy hod and hod carriers used for plastering or bricklaying.
Tower Scaffold
A Tower scaffold must have other support than just legs. Scaffold towers outriggers are usually used, but sometimes the scaffolding can be chained or pinned to the building. A scaffold tower is usually erected by using a small mobile crane.
Scaffolding, scaffold tower, or scaffold frames can be rented for one time jobs. Scaffolding rental places are common and can be found readily in the Yellow Pages—just look under RENTAL EQUIPMENT. All types of scaffolding and scaffold towers can be rented—even wooden scaffolds.
